JO SHEARER

I am Jo Shearer, an Artist and Art Educator living and working in Leicestershire. My belief is that art is for everyone. It is another language for expressing and communicating our experiences, thoughts and emotions which often reflect the world around us and how we fit into it. Art can demonstrate a tremendous level of skill and be aesthetically pleasing, however it’s greatest strength is in its capacity to express and unite people and the physicality of the making process that makes it such an important and integral part of our lives.

After finding my passion for art during secondary education, i went on to study a BA(Hons) in Visual arts and English Literature at Keele University where the focus of my work became video installations that provoked a visceral response from the viewer.

Following my degree I went on to study for a PGCE in secondary art at the University of Hertfordshire and worked in schools and colleges in Hertfordshire and Leicestershire for over 10 years. During this time I enjoyed the freedom to work in a variety of media and developed an increasing love for print. Inspired by my students perspectives and ideas I enjoyed nurturing their creativity and developing skills to build their confidence in their own work as well as evoking a sense of calm and release of emotions through the process of making.

After leaving mainstream education I continued my love of teaching through tutoring and went on to develop workshops suitable for a range of ages and abilities. My personal work explores the spaces that we inhabitant, the collection of experiences and emotions that connect us to a space and the inherent beauty of the natural world in all its forms.
